Get a copy of "Lightweight Camping Equipment and How to Make it"
by Gerry Cunningham & Margaret Hansson.
ISBN 0-684-14262-7 or ISBN 0-684-14261-9 (paperback)

This book was published back in 1976 an may well be out of print.
However it has a lot of info on lightweight gear that is still
valid today.  It's worth searching for!

For those of you too young to remember, Gerry Cunningham started
Gerry Mountain Sports after WWII, where he served in the 10th Mt.
Division.  Gerry was a firm advocate of light-weight backpacking
way before it's time, and coined the phrase "An ounce of technique
is worth a pound of equipment".
