An infectious disease caused by a hardy bacterium. No reported human cases in
San Diego County.One should use precautions in areas containing ticks. A tick
was found in November, 2002 coastal San Diego that tested positive for
tularemia. Earlier September, a dead rabbit and other ticks in the same area
tested positive for tularemia. It is transmitted by bite, handling infected
animal carcasses, eating or drinking contaminants. Fever, chills, headaches,
muscle aches, joint pain, dry cough, progressive weakness, and pneumonia.
Other jpossibilities include skin or oral ulcers, swollen and painful lymph
glands or eyes and a sosre throat. Symptoms appear in 3-5 days to 14 days.
No person-to-person spread. Appropriate antibiotics would include
tetracycline 14 day regimen. Use long sleeves (light colored) and pants
tucked into boots, or socks (trail runners). Tuck shirt into pants or double
shirt and trap between layers. Use repellants. There is no vaccine. For
