[pct-l] Poorly educated snowpack guesses ( was Re: El Nino Gossip)

[ Picked text/plain from multipart/alternative ]

Last year, 2002, I skipped the high Sierra's where I arrived on May 28th, (=
KM.) I followed "advice" on this list that claimed north of Donner Pass, (I=
-80) would be "free of snow." I did not find that to be the case for much o=
f the trail after that. I went as far as Devil's Peak, just before Crater L=
ake, where I lost the trail in deep snow and was unable to find it again, (=
that would have needed a better map). I did the high Sierras beginning on J=
uly 5th and saw no more than an occasional snow bank after that.
Just goes to show that reality is the final judge of some of the "advice" =
dished out on this list. Frank Kroger/Satellite.

While it was certainly entertaining, some folks may have actually
taken you seriously. As I recall, and I may be wrong, your 'guesses'
were for late May/early June for departure from Kennedy Meadows.

I left Kennedy on June 3rd and all the passes above 10,500 feet
were choked with snow. (Anyone out there remember Muir Pass?) My
departure was at my descretion and not based on your info, it was
incidental.

Ray Jardine, who has far more experience than the vast majority
of people on this list suggests that a thru-hiker not enter the
high sierras prior to June 15th (on a normal snow year) and for
good reason. If you enjoy the snow, go for it, it is kind of
exciting, assuming you're PLANNING/PREPARED for it.

Anyway Hummel, you are a knowledgable guy and I respect that, but
if you plan on some self gratification again this year,
please note that someone might actually think you know what
you're talking about (you're not guessing), disclaimer or not.
