[pct-l] Advice sought on lightway trek
I've no idea. But if you go backpacking, get back with me. Generally
speaking, as a *very* rough rule of thumb, if it *requires* specialized gea=
r
to do the trip under all circumstances (I think I might have covered all th=
e
bases with that one), in other words, waiting it out, doing it during a
different part of the day, etc., won't alleviate the requirement for a
specialized piece of gear, it is in the realm of possibility that you're no=
t
backpacking. I think it's that climb-the-iced-up-waterfall part that will
disqualify this one.
Given that, I'd probably carry my Sherpa SnowClaws (20 years old) just
because I've not figured out how to pay for a set of Northern Lites. If the
snow is hard enough to not need shoes, and it seems prudent for the season,
I'd probably carry just Kathoolas and walk. Boots would probably be the
inner boots I made with a set of N.E.O.S. overshoes. Tent would be the beta
Bibler at well under 3 pounds. Night time jacket, Western Mountaineering
overstuffed Flight with down booties for sleeping (I'm diabetic. Daytime
clothes, Patagucci SW under EW top, Superfly tights under Talus pants with =
a
Dragonfly on top. Bag would probably be a Big Agnes Pomer Hoit (0 dg.) with
2 or 3 3/8th foam pads stacked in the sleeve. Pack could be a ULA P-2 or a
Mountainsmith Auspex. Lot's of other details, of course, but that would
cover part of the basics.

I can=B9t whine/rant/pontificate/command/troll abt lite trekking w/out doin=
g
it. Tell me what I should do and I will do it. After trek, I will report my
reactions. On Friday, 10 January, I am going to do the following trek: clim=
b
The Wittenberg Mountain, elevation gain 3000 feet over 4.95 miles,
snow depth 36-45 inches, weather- abt 25F at base, 15F at summit with
unknown wind, but minimum of 10mph, climb two iced, three tiered waterfalls=
,
not vertical, abt 65 degree slope overall, a drop of 70 feet from top of
each. Sunrise is 7:24, sunset is 4:40pm, but darkness is early because
mountains to the west crunch the sunset to abt 3:30pm. Roundtrip is 10
miles.
What should I carry, footwear, snowshoes, etc. as an ultralight trekker
would do it given the above?
Thanks for your help. It should be interesting and, hopefully, fun. Marc
