IMHO, it's all a matter of common sense.
---------------------------------------------
Research your proposed route; terrain, hazards, supply/escape options, weat=
her patterns.
Critically evaluate your past experience in light of what you will be facin=
g. Letting ego overload ability can have serious consequences. Murphy is on=
e of the major Trail Gods.
Know the strengths (and especially the weaknesses) of your body and your ge=
ar. (i.e. if, like me, you absolutely can't read a map or compass without y=
our glasses, carry at least two pair, no matter the weight).
Select your gear accordingly.
Enjoy your hike.
