Check out the book by Clinton C. Clarke, "The Pacific Crest Trailway".  You
will not likely find any copies anywhere except at
http://www.pctplanner.com/pcttrailway/     because it was printed in 1945 and
only a few copies.  However, it has a good general history of the trail as it
came to be, from concept to construction of pieces to completion of
interconnecting sections.  For any info on more recent trail completion, land
purchase, etc. contact the PCTA at www.pcta.org
