Its my understanding that the sings are 'put back' a significant distance s=
o that they will NOT be as noticeable by the general public who are the one=
s who steal them as souvenirs. This was told to be by both USFS personnel a=
nd staff memebers at the PCTA office. The 'mature' hiker knows to 'sniff ar=
ound' a bit and check out intersections before making a commitment.

P.S. I have not seen any "several hundred yards" past a junction.
