The theory that humans hunted them to extinction is a widely contested one 
with no proof.  The scientist (can't remember the guy's name) that came to 
this conclusion was basing his decision on socialogical reasons.  In 
researching bones, they are coming to believe that humans were actually the 
dinner for these beasts, not the other way around.
