If you are willing to spend a night out, you would do better. I'd head over
to Lake Tahoe and hike sections North and South from there. You could start
at Echo Lake and go north toward Donner Summit, exiting down to Lake Tahoe
at several points. The section is 63+ miles - would take 3 days (2 nights)
at 20/day.  Get the Pacific Crest Trail Volume 1. Also, check out the PCTA
store - they list 2 day hikes on the PCT called "Day Hikes on the Pacific
Crest Trail" for $16.95.  There is a California and Washington/Oregon book:

       Day Hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail - California $16.95
       37 - Day Hikes on the Pacific Crest Trail - Oregon & Washington
$16.95

      These two guides are the first to highlight segments of the Pacific
Crest Trail you can hike in one day. Routes range from 4 to 20 mile sections
of the PCT from Mexico to Canada. Detailed trail information includes
mileage, elevation change, and difficulty ratings.

Fellow Hikers:

I'm interested in hiking on the PCT for the first time.  I'd like to know
where I can find information about places to access the trail for a one-day
hike.  Either towns or trailheads where I can be dropped off and then picked
up without having to double-back on the trail.  Are there any 15-20 mile
sections that are possible to do in one day in this manner?  I'm from the
San Francisco Bay Area and so would be interested in such a section within a
few hours drive.
