[pct-l] Water Purification

Frank (et al),

There was bacteria (variety unknown) in a tank at Messenger Flats about =
two years ago. The U.S.F.S. shut the tank down, and has since reopened =
it. They test it regularly, and there have been were no reports =
subsequent to their action. That particular year, however, I had to =
pick up numerous hikers littered all over the trail 10-20 miles in =
either direction. They had violent stomach flu symptoms, and were =
generally down for days recovering. I think the point is that something =
like that both can and did happen, and "an ounce of prevention is worth =
a pound of cure."=20

Donna: can you be more specific about the location of the bad water? =
If so would you please reply to the pct list. Though I have a filter, I =
would prefer to avoid bad water.=20

  Thanks, Frank=20

I am loathe to comment on the many aspects of hiking that so many =
who contribute to this list know infinitely more about. However, I have =
had what amounts to a great deal of experience supporting hikers through =
this section. And I've seen many of them very sick (nausea, vomiting, =
fever) from water taken at place about 20 miles south of here. It's no =
fun to be sick out there, weakened and miserable. I've heard from many =
hikers after their trips, and a fair number had their trips cut short =
due to water impurities.=20

Take care of yourself. You can't see bacteria, and everyone is =
unique in how they react to things. Have a good hike.
