hmmmm..... the comment "not good to drink on an extended basis" appears to be based on mere scepticism. I can't imagine that GSE is any worse for you than eating Grapefruits.
However, below is a medical journal extract that indicates that the antimicrobial effects of GSE seem to be due to the presence of preservatives, and that GSE tested with no preservatives seemed to show no antimicobial efficacy.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=10399191&dopt=Abstract
here are a few more links that advertize that GSE can kill Giardia:
http://www.pureliquidgold.com/travelrecreation.htm
http://www.naturalmeals.com/GSE.html
Whether its the GSE or the preservatives, seems like it couldn't be any worse for you than Chlorine or Iodine. Everything has long-term side effects.
Long term exposure to Chlorine has caused cancer in lab rats and is suspected to be a potent carcinogen in Humans: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9196250&dopt=Abstract
Long-term exposure to Iodine treated water has cause decreased Thyroid function in Astronauts: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11086666&dopt=Abstract
Long term exposure to flouride makes people docile (not that it is used for purification).
Just because something is not mainstream, doesn't mean anything. Check it out for yourself.
Peace,
Dude in texas
