[pct-l] Bear Canister Tactics!
Per Greg, (admittedly w/tongue in cheek)
>and to correct the PROBLEM of lack of people fear in bears, they
(SEKI/Inyo/Yos) will now require only one, light weight, item to be carried
and used by all backpackers into Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Cnyn NP and
INYO NF: A wrist rocket, sling shot to zap every bear seen.<
Oooohhhh - imagine where THIS discussion will go w/o a sense of humor!
>Does anybody out there actually have experience using one (a slingshot) to
repel bears, is it "legal".<
Hmmm, let's see...the black bear is not "officially" endangered, so zapping
with a wrist rocket wouldn't be "harrassing" an "endangered" species....and
so not prohibited under the Endangered Species Act. But (not having read
them recently) there's probably other park/nat'l forest regulations out
there that prohibit "harrassing" wildlife in general.
But...are people-habituated bears wildlife? Hmmm.....
Christine (who lives with 3 cats, a husband, feeds lots of "wild" birds, &
otherwise enjoys encountering bears & other wildlife as long as they're not
in her food)
