I just got back from 9 days on the JMT and learned of Jack Fair's death.  
I'm saddened though perhaps not surprised that he ended his life this 
way.  It was pretty clear to me two years ago, after having spent a 
couple of hours alone with him, that he was in some physical and mental 
pain even then.  I'd like to think that the Jack <--> thru-hiker 
relationship was of great benefit to both parties and that Jack waited 
until he saw the last of this year's group off before he ended his own 
long walk.

p.s. Here's a link to a nice photo of Jack, his dog Mindy (well, Mindy's 
backside anyway), and Meadow Ed.  I'm sure the garage will look familar 
to all those who spent the night on the floor.
