Yeah, I say that's negative.  

The last time you climbed Ranier, did you feel a sense of accomplishment, did 
you feed your ego, did you tell anyone?  What difference does it make if he's 
climbing a mountain for a few days or hiking on a trail or three for a year?  
He pushing himself to his limits, the same most do when they bag a 14,000 
footer or do a single thru-hike, only he can do it longer and faster than 
most.  

I started out doing 8 miles a day, hurting and missing much of the wonders 
around me, now my comfort zone is double or triple that.  It doesn't mean I'm 
enjoying the trail and less, on the contrary, I can see and enjoy it more.

Anyway, he's now carrying a cell or satellite phone, you can call him of your 
displeasure.
