> I won't mention any names, but...

Well, "Name Not Mentioned" didn't leave because he was ill prepared,
although Mother Nature certainly did throw him a curve. An ill prepared
hiker couldn't do repeated 20+ mile days on snowshoes (and still sinking a
foot deep in snow) in freezing temperatures and storms and not be prepared.

IMHO, it takes a stronger person to know when to retreat than to press on
regardless.

> Or does it leave the door wide open for some future nit picker...

Absolutely. But "Name Not Mentioned" will still be the first to _hike_ the 3
trails in one year, even if someone later _thru hikes_ them, whatever that
means.

Rhetorical question (we've been there before): How long of an exit from the
trail can one take before it's not a thru hike? Pick up a box at a post
office? Eat at the diner next door? Spend a night in their lodge? A weekend?
Go home a week for an emergency? Wait a few months for conditions to change,
while still hiking on one of the long trails?
