[pct-l] Everest verses PCT

One of my pet peeves. Too many people trying to go places many of them
probably aren't ready for. It amazes me how people will pay almost anything
(even their lives it seems) to a guide to climb some of these prestigious
peaks. I made a summit bid on Mt Rainier in 1998 and was shocked to reach
Disappointment Cleaver and turn around to see a vertual interstate of
headlamps being guided up the mountain behind me. I'd heard about it, but to
actually see it was another matter. Your post makes me want to hurry up and
get to the PCT before it too is turned into some trivial pursuit. At least
there are more opportunities for opting out of finishing the PCT. It also
isn't romantacised like Everest. At least I haven't seen a PCT gum on the
shelves yet! There are some tough muldoons out there that can jump right
into something with success, but I think the majority of us require building
up some experience under our belts and some preperation (why I'm here!).

Whew, done with the rant :>)
