[pct-l] Water/machismo/record heat
All right Damien!!! Tell him Mountain Dave said hi and the very best of luck
to a really nice guy. I hiked with him off and on in California in 99. Looks
like he finally found the time to do a complete thru hike. If he needs any
assistance in Washington (Rides, food drop at Stevens, etc) tell him to give
me a call 360-871-5577.
On machismo - Nothing any body does physically impresses me. There's always
somebody out there who can do it faster or better. Creativity and a good
heart are the only things that impress me. If you break some sort of record
and feel the the need to tell me about it then you are trying to impress me
cause after all I don't really need to know, now do I. I read somewhere that
you know you are doing mountaineering for self satisfaction when you go out
and bag a major peak AND TELL ABSOLUTELY NO ONE ELSE ABOUT IT! I volunteered
nothing about my thru hike unless asked to do so. I wrote about it because I
was asked to by many of the people in my club that supported my effort and to
give recognition to my trail angels. Quite honestly, at 54, when someone says
I broke some sort of speed record I think ho hum, how trite. So yeah,to each
his own. Just don't try to convince me that your thru hike is more worthy
than mine simply because you did it faster cause I ain't buying into it.
Doing your very best is, of course, important. Doing something better than
EVERYBODY else ain't -at least in my book
Looks like the 2001 thru hikers can forget about the snow for awhile. Just
read that record heat has settled into areas like Palm Springs
