[pct-l] Giardia in Oregon

The following story was in the Portland Oregonian on Wed 04/04. FYI, the
PCT skirts the western boundry of Deschutes County.

Most waters are home
to parasite, officials warn

BEND -- Beware: Central Oregon rivers, lakes,
streams and irrigation canals are filled with a
microscopic parasite called giardia.

Animals spread the parasite to most waterways.

Signs of infection include abdominal cramps, diarrhea
and nausea, said Trevor Hostetler, communicable
disease coordinator for the Deschutes County Health
Department. Symptoms can persist for two to three
months if left untreated.

Giardia can be found in water, soil and food, and it
can be spread by touching contaminated surfaces.
People should take precautions when going outdoors,
such as boiling water before drinking it.

According to the Oregon Health Division, 614 cases of
giardia were reported between 1990 and 1999 in
Deschutes County.

In 1999, 102 cases were reported, placing the county
at the top of the state. The number dropped
significantly in 2000 to 52 reported cases.

Officials aren't sure why so many cases are reported
in Deschutes County.
