Well, I have done it a lot either by myself or with another person.  I do
not get out on the road with my thumb out as a rule, but sometimes I do,
depending on the location of the road and how frequent the traffic is.
Mostly I go to people who are parked in the trailheads or somewhere similar.
I think you have to use your own judgment and what you are comfortable with.
