Dysentery is caused by an amoeba, and Giardia is a cyst (hard shell, harder 
to kill).

Dysentery and other food borne illnesses hit fast and hard. Giardia creeps 
up over a week or so, and give much more gas and gut rumbling. Dysentery is 
not a problem for USA back country travel. Giardia is.

Flagyl works, but, by all accounts (CDC, US Armed Forces, several medical 
references) Tinidazol works BETTER with fewer side effects.
