>About how much money does food and stuff like that add up to????

including food but not pre-hike gear bought, people spend anywhere from
$1,000 to $5,000+ for a thru-hike. 2500 to 3000 is about average, and enough
for it to include a fair amount of town luxury items (motels, restaurants,
etc). If careful, one can get by comfortably on significantly less. The
combination of buying food in bulk, then dehydrating it yourself can save a
lot of money, but this is later lessened by the subsequent cost of postage.

If you still have to buy all your gear, that can range from $500 to $2000.
The low end of that range would include doing things like making your own
gear, getting really good deals, buying cheap things - like $6 sleeping pad
instead of $80 thermarest, or $2 soda can stove instead of $60 MSR stove,
etc. The most important things to consider in gear selection is warmth,
hydration, and food. In the process of purchasing, one can cut lots of
corners without sacrificing those three factors. The comfort factor is much
more adjustable.
