I agree with leaving most of those things at home Mr. Hummel, but I suggest
holding onto your compass until you pass the snow covered portions of the
trail. Everything looks the same in the snow and without a compass I think
you could get into trouble or in the least turned around if conditions
proved adverse. One of my most memorable days was a foggy, snow covered day
in Washington when without a compass I would have been sitting that day and
the next one out. Of course I was teaching myself how to use the compass
that day, but that is a whole different story. Keep those items that ease
your comfort level until you know you can safely part with them. But by all
means, lose the timepiece.
