Have you updated the firmware in your GPS lately?  Garmin keeps releasing
new firmware revisions that improve things like getting satellite lock under
trees.

Also, take a look at the satellite configuration screen.  (Does the Garmin
12XL have one?  My Magellan does.)  Sometimes the satellite configuration is
just all wrong, and there's nothing you can do about it.  Fortunately, those
things orbit pretty fast so it usually doesn't take more than a couple of
hours to get a more favorable configuration.
