Your responses echo exactly what I would have said. (I didn't respond
originally because my reference point is 1977, and I thought things might
have changed a little since then!) Everything, that is, except your last
paragraph.

I don't think the authors' intention is that you visit every lake, but that
you realize a lake is available whenever you do need one. As for the views
on the "Crest" trail, are you kidding? Until we got to Crater Lake, we never
saw anything in Oregon except trees. There were even some spur trails marked
"Vista, 300 yards." Weird enough that they offer such trails in the first
place, but then when you get there, the vista rarely got you out of the
forest anyway! (But from Crater Lake north, the views are terrific.)
