Where are you located?  If you are in the east the Adirondack and
Appalachian Mountain Clubs (ADK & AMC) jointly offer a winter mountaineering
course each year.  They have week long and weekend versions.  Check out:

I've been trying to take the course for the last two winters but life's been
getting in the way.  I also took a one day intoduction to winter techniques
called "Ready, Set, Go... and (perhaps) Stop" offered by a local (Rochester,
NY) company called "Pack, Paddle & Ski."

I have no idea if they are going to offer it this year.  There may be groups
offering similar things in your area.
