4 proposals being considered for federal Roadless Initiative
June 27, 2000
There are four alternatives being proposed by the U.S. Forest Service in its
Roadless Initiative:
*No rule prohibiting activities in inventoried areas would be issued. Road
construction and reconstruction would be prohibited only in areas prescribed
by local forest land management plans. Local forest officials would consider
proposals for road construction and reconstruction case by case.
*Road construction and reconstruction would be prohibited in inventoried
areas.
*Road construction and reconstruction would be prohibited in inventoried
areas. Timber harvesting would be prohibited except when specifically
designed for preserving ecological balance. For example, thinning overly
dense stands of trees so that fire can be safely reintroduced. Commercial
timber activities would be prohibited. But personal-use harvesting -- such as
firewood and Christmas tree cutting -- would be allowed.
*Road construction and reconstruction would be prohibited in the inventoried
areas. All timber harvesting would be prohibited, except for personal use,
such as firewood or Christmas Tree cutting.
The deadline for submitting written public comments on the roadless proposal
is July 17.
