Re: [pct-l] water stashes

Hmm....

I think I got it. It reminds me a lot of some discussions I've seen on the
AT-L mailing list. My take on Karen's message was:

(1) "Trail Magic" is wonderful.
(2) Once people start expecting trail magic it isn't really trail magic
anymore.
(3) Once people start figuring the trail magic into their planning and don't
carry enough water then they are putting themselves at risk.

It's the "law of unintended consequences." I thought that Karen went out of
her way to say that she appreciated the thought behind the water stashes and
had benefited from them herself. She used and appreciated them in the
generous spirit in which they were intended, and had sadly observed that
some people were not.

My own tack on the water stashes (unasked for and worth every penny you paid
for it) is:

(1) Do it if it makes you feel good... when it isn't fun anymore stop.
(2) Don't advertise them.
(3) Vary the locations from year to year (or even within a year).
(4) Leave a big sign with the stashes indicating what they are for, that
they are not being regularly maintained, and that nobody should count on
there being any water there.

And then have fun.
