You CAN:
1-Stick a small piece of Velcro on your hiking hat brim and another piece on
one of those tiny lights that everyone carries. This make a
more-than-adequate 1/4 ounce hands-free headlamp. Yes the little buggers
[mini-light] run out of juice quickly but the still weigh a lot less than
batteries.
2-If you use a tarp, whip up a home-made bug screen and hang it from the
poles [hiking poles] supporting your tent. Even a MAN could do this sewing.
3-You could make a tarp that acts like a poncho also. It looked a bit harder
than a bug screen so maybe ONLY a WOMAN could do it.
4-You could replace old, broken or just heavy tent poles with arrow shafts.
They are very light and flexible. You could even buy a cheap $79 tent and
replace those fiberglass poles with arrow shafts and make a lightweight tent
cheaply. Why didn't you think of this? Monte did!
5-You can install a small loop on your shoes to attach your gaiters to and
save your shoelaces.
You CANNOT:
1-You cannot make a spectra backpack like Rosemarie Karon did. Spectra is
virtually uncuttable and takes talent to work with. This pack was a work of
art. In fact you cannot even make a backpack like Peete Duffy or BushPilot
did out of normal material. Both were better made than anything seen in a
store. You MIGHT be able to make a simple lightweight backpack like Ron MOAK
but remember it took him three tries to get it right. You can't buy a
spectra backpack like mine. The boss will never approve the expenditure. You
can modify a lightweight pack like the GV4 and include a stay made of an
arrowshaft.
You CAN be my hero:
Once, when Alan was a small boy, I rounded the bend to Turner Meadow
[Yosemite] and there found a family with F-I-V-E children setting up camp.
The children ranged from an infant to a teenager. For 10 years this mom and
dad have been my hero. Never have I seen such courage. Now a throughhike
with a family of five......
You CAN:
If you want to rabble rouse and piss people off ask an expert.
