IMHO, the lightest weight ice axe will suffice in 99% of the potential 
situations that you are likely to find yourself in.  That's not bad.  For 
example, in what percentage of the likely situations will a tarp suffice as 
protection? 85%? 90%?  Certainly not 99%.  Go for it.
