Yes bears are that smart. Between Kennedy Meadows and I-80, if a bear shows
up at your campsite, he will probably steal your food. If you protect your
food with your person by storing it in your tent you risk injury and a
ticket for improper food storage.

If you "stealth camp", particularly at high altitude where no one usually
camps, and traverse the Sierra in the snow, a bear will probably not show
up.
