Thanks for your thoughts.  I did not mean to imply a value judgement
in my remark about "choosing", though I guess I came across that way.

I can relete from my own experience though.. in 1989 I hiked the John
Muir Trail.  In the area of Little Yosemite Valley I inadvertantly
took a "short-cut" of about 1/4 mile, where I got off the main trail.

Wierd as it may seem, it has bothered me off and on, that I haven't
"really" hiked the whole trail.
