To me, a tent's purpose is to keep a hiker dry AND insect free. Tarps can do
a fine job of keeping you dry , but do little about crawly critters. After
being bit by a brown recluse 3 years ago a taking 2 months to heal my hand
wound, my tarp only days are out of here!!! My new light and SAFE tent
system will be a slumberjack summerbivy, which is nearly all net in a two
pole bivy form , but with a easy open side zipper entrance. Then cover the
bivy with my old Eureka timberline rainfly supported with my two ski poles.
This set-up should allow me to cook under the rainfly plus keep ants,
spiders, scorpions and snakes at bay. Weight should be in around 3 and a half
pounds. ( Have the room of a two man tent ,but the weight of a bivy ) ------
If this sounds too heavy, read up on Norman Clyde. Clyde was a Sierra
pioneer climber who carried 80lb.packs with 3 types of shoes. ( cast iron
cookwere) Made John Muir look like a bearded whimplet compared to his
feats!!! Many first ascents were Clyde's in the Sierras with a peak or two
named after him. Still climbing at age 86 but died in 1972. ( no
fleece,goretex,1.1oz silicone coated ripstop,waterfilters,internal frame
packs, bic stoves) We are all watered down Cub Scouts compared to
Noman!!!!!!!!!!!!
