Highly recommend the Dow Villa Hotel. Inexpensive (around $30. a night as I
recall), colorful old place with good breakfast next door and pizza across
the street. You can spend hours in the lobby just looking at old western
movie memorabilia. Ghosts of John Wayne, Tim Holt and all the other
white-hatted heroes of yesteryear. Hiyo Silver!
If you stay over in Lone Pine, you might return to the trail via Cottonwood
Pass rather than climbing with a full pack to Whitney Trailcrest. You hike
the PCT to Crabtree Meadow and do Whitney on the way out to Lone Pine. Then,
retracing your steps north from Cottonwood, you can do an alternate route
down the Rock Creek trail.
