Re: [pct-l] Journals

Since I did a hiker journal I cannot comment since I'm biased ;^)

But, I would like to know what would make a journal more interesting.

From my experience it was quite difficult to try and write something that
would be informative or entertaining day after day. Especially at the end of
a 30 mile day. After a while it's hard to make the trail interesting. And I
would often find myself after dark writing by headlamp, while other trail
friends had gone to sleep, wondering if it was worth the effort.

So, I guess what I'm asking is what would you want to hear?

After having read PCT journals posted on the web I think the ideal
readable journal has a couple of themes. For me the most interesting
journals chronicle the falling away of civilization's filters and how a
person deals with suddenly unleashed and intensely felt emotions. I
think this happens to people who hike alone more intensely (opinion!).
The trail itself is a constantly changing backdrop for "The Trip" which
is mostly emotional/mental. A well described campspot or ridgetop view
often rekindles my memories of the trail. I appreciate use of humor in
wry description of other people.

My journals were intensely personal and had very little to do with trail
descriptions or other people. It is hard to read them as they are so
intensely raw...
