Mark,
I read your accounts also. I am not saying that crampons are REQUIRED. Tons
of thru hikers make it thru in sneakers and nothing else save an axe. What I
am challenging is the statement: "Again, it was not at all worth the extra
weight to carry crampons." I am not suggesting that standard 5 pound,
clamp-on crampons are worth the weight. I am suggesting that an extra pound
of 6 point crampons may very well be worth the weight given the descriptions
[including yours] of steep slopes and hard work when all you have is
sneakers and an axe.
