[pct-l] Boots For The Sierra

Laraine Kate Downer ("Uphill Wanderer") wrote , "for the Sierras, plan to
acquire lightweight boots (with -per Jardine: "good toe bumper for kicking
steps, sturdy edges, etc." )".

As with most other issues you will receive quite different opinions. I'd stick with your running shoes. I have used running shoes exclusively for the last three years. In '97 I hiked the John Muir Trail. In '98, a heavy snow year, I walked from Mammoth to Yosemite and spent ten days circling the park. Last year I did the southern half of the PCT. I found no need for boots even in deep snow. I did use trekking poles with small snow baskets. The traction was fine. Except for one night when I foolishly hiked in a storm my feet were quite warm. I used to carry gaiters and instep crampons but decided that offered little value and no longer take them.

Your training sounds solid. I train with 50 pounds and my trail pack weight is usually 1/3 of that. As a result my trail pack feels great.
