Actually you do not need to be a veteran.  Any disabled person can get
a free, lifetime pass.  Citizens over age 62 can purchase the lifetime
"Golden Age" pass for a one-time fee of $10.  The rest of us can
purchase an annual "Golden Eagle" for $50.

These passes provide free entrance to those national parks, monuments,
historic sites, recreation areas, and national wildlife refuges that
charge an entrance fee.  In addition the "Golden Age" and "Golden
Access" passports provide a 50% discount of federal use fees charged
for facilities and services such as fees for camping, swimming,
parking, boat launching, or cave tours. Read all about the three
