Not sure but the issue may be with the type of GPS your phone uses (GPS vs A-GPS). A-GPS requires connectivity to cell or WiFi where a true GPS receiver in a phone doesn't.  The Half mile app requires either to work properly so the issue may be the type of phone GPS. My understanding is most Samsung phones have a separate GPS the will work in airplane mode which is what you want when out on the trail. So check out your phone specs.
