I assumed we weren't talking about a few grams? In any case, dumping
insecticide down the sewer (in any quantity) is irresponsible in the
extreme.
I like to think that most hikers would not intentionally harm the
environment. But we sometimes do so out of ignorance.

I've spent a few hours trying to research the topic of disposal. But the
options & rules vary from state to state.
However, I did find some info. & suggestions that would apply to all
locations. In did find repeated warnings that we should "Never Place
Unused Product Down Any Indoor or Outdoor Drain"
Permethrin is an insecticide and is formally classified as a Neurotoxin.
It should seem obvious to anyone that something like this should never be
dumped down a drain.
Rules & regulations are unfortunately necessary for those of us determined
to ignore simple good sense on such things. I would certainly expect
better judgement from the hiker community.

For those interested in doing the right thing, here are some repeated
suggestions that I came across:
1. Purchase only what you intend to use in one season.
2. Leftover product can be stored for future use.
3. Share leftover product with others (hikers, neighbors, etc)
4. Properly dispose of at local waste collection agency.

Local disposal agencies do accept "household hazardous waste" if labeled
properly. This means in the original container or with a SDS (formerly
MSDS) in an appropriate container.
Note that there is no charge for a household drop-off. There would be a
charge for industrial waste collection. So, if it is free, why would we
not do it properly?
Many waste collection agencies do not pick up at curbside. But many do
accept drop-off. Sometimes these drop-offs are on set days & locations.
Call your local waste agency for collection times & instructions.
Or, 1-800-CLEANUP (1-800-253-2687) is a national number you can contact.

Sorry to beat this dead horse so long. But this is a topic that we need
to get right! Thanks in advance for doing the right thing for OUR
environment.

Not to be glib on LNT and proper disposal of chemicals, but hundreds
of TONS of permethrin get sprayed all over crops and waterways for
mosquito abatement every year. A few grams into the sewer system is
not going have a significant additional impact.

I think there are better places to direct any outrage.
