Do you really want to carry snow gear through 700 miles of desert? The
way things are looking now, you might want some of it in the San
Jacintos, but otherwise, you won't want to carry it.

It is a very good idea to have one, assuming you know how to use it.

How do you expect to use it? A short piece of lightweight nylon line,
maybe. Climbing rope, no.
