[pct-l] First timer's pack

Sabrina,

The ULA Circuit is the pack most commonly carried by long distance PCT hikers, at least when I was on the trail in 2012 and 2013. It requires a moderate level of discipline to pack light, and is not strong enough to endure cross-country travel where it could be ripped, but is great for long-distance hiking.

I carried the ULA Ohm, which is a bit smaller and lighter. I was very disciplined not to bring excess gear, and invested significantly in an ultralight tent, sleeping bag, and clothing, which let me fit in the small pack. Compared to the monsters I used to carry, I felt like I was floating up the trail. I switched to a bigger pack for the Sierra Nevada, where I needed to carry a bear canister and heavier sleeping bag, but saw others who managed it with a small pack and wish I had done the same.

Hey everybody!

I'd love to start a conversation about the contents of a first timer's pack (and what type of pack, for that matter)!

Shroomer suggested I hit the local trails and start building up endurance. I'd love to know what you think I should bring, and what brands you recommend. I'm sure over time, I will know exactly what I like based on trial and error. But for now, I just need to get started with something that fits the general purpose.

I am reading and listening carefully, but some of the gear discussions go over my head because I have never used anything other then a marmot day pack for scrambling around the lake.

Thanks so much for your advice.
Cheers
Sabrina
