[pct-l] Cowboy camping

I switched from a Tarptent Contrail to an MLD poncho tarp about 5 years ago
and have never gotten wet, including last year's CT hike which was
unusually rainy even for Colorado.  I do use a bivy sack in addition to the
tarp as it enables cowboy camping a bit more than a bare sleeping bag.

But I am considering taking the Contrail on my PCT section hike this year
(Walker Pass to Mt Lassen) because I still vividly remember the bugs on the
JMT when my Scout troop hiked Reds Meadows to Yosemite.  That was in 1968
and we had tube tents for shelter which needless to say did not keep out
bugs, or water either for that matter.  1000 Island Lake to Donahue Pass,
and Sunrise Camp were particularly heinous.

My bivy (TiGoat) does have a bug screen, and maybe a headnet with lots of
DEET will make the bugs bearable before bedtime.  Still mulling this one
over.

Maybe Halfmile can start a PCT Mosquito report to complement his maps and
water report.
