Is there any data about trail impact of running versus walking?

As I recall, many of the National Parks and Forests I have visited limit
group size to prevent damage to the trails etc.  Do not these running
events overload the trails with people, not walking, but running and
would that not result in impacting the trail even more in a negative
way?
