I think what she is saying is that nobody stays on the official route
for the entire distance. There are some very popular alternates, such as
Eagle Creek, that most thrus take, and still consider themselves as
having hiked the entire distance from Mexico to Canada. If you resupply
at Crater Lake, odds are, you missed part of the official route, but you
still walked every inch of the distance from Mexico to Canada.
