Yeah, over time your feet get stronger and the heal and arch supports just
impede their natural working. At this point I like the feel of a rocky
trail under my feet as it's like getting a bit of a massage while I'm
hiking. When i first went to lighter soled shoes that used to kill me.
Now I've hiked all of the CDT and AT with no insoles or supports of any
kind on thin soled shoes, and the part of my body that felt the best after
each long day was my feet. No pain. I had been crippled with planters
fasciitis on the PCT back when I used arch supported and heal cushioned
shoes. The only time my feet hurt now is when I tighten the laces too
much. As long as I wear them like big floppy clown shoes I can make a 30
mile day, day after day with no pain. And yes the Altra Lone Peaks are the
ticket. At the ALDHA West last Sept they were the most common shoes in the
building. A lot of great hikers are using them.
