Thanks for the pointers.  Lots of info at:http://www.pctmap.net/2015/02/about-the-2015-halfmile-updates/

Either map set will work but we are advised:"These new, more accurate, mileage estimates mean hikers need to be careful not to mix 2014 and 2015 Halfmile data because the mileages will not match."

So if someone on the trail gives you directions including a mileage reference ask what map set they are using.
