Northbound hikers start in the spring.
If there were no ADZ that would still be true.
It is possible to start early and hitch back or attend the ADZ and start
later.
In fact, spending a week on the trail and hitching back with a pitstop in
the "pie town" of California; Julian, is quite pleasant.
Heck why not start two weeks early and get some of SoCal done.
After the ADZ you hitch back to where you left off, stopping in Julian
again of course, and you are on your merry way.

There will be a concentration of hikers starting around the end of April
ADZ or not.
