[pct-l] Running shoe alternatives

A lady I hiked with for a little while in 2008 used Keen Newports and really liked them. I have hiked many many miles of the PCT in Chaco sandals. Some shoes are not that great in the snow, but where there isn't snow, the trail isn't so totally rugged you absolutely need rugged shoes. My problem with snow and Chacos is that snow would get stuck under my toes making it hard to walk. I hiked in Keens once and my problem with those was lack of traction (fell down numerous times) and crossing streams I would get a lot of sand and gravel in my shoes that wouldn't come out. But that wasn't on the PCT. Also, foxtails ugh. But those seem to be a problem in just about every kind of shoe.

Has anyone gone with barefoot or?open top?shoes?(Vibram 5-fingers, Keen newports, etc) for their thru hike? Both of these have worked for me on hikes in the past.
