I used the SPOT for two months daily this spring and it was reliable.
I have an older model. You don't need a smart phone to send a regular
message that is attached to your location, but it has to be a canned
one you make up before the trip that never changes and it is sent out
to 10 people's email that you set up before the trip. People can
follow your progress in Google Earth.
