[pct-l] External Frame Packs

Having just sold two Jansport D-3s and given away a Kelty Super Tioga,
I'm chuckling at this thread. In 1993 my girlfriend and I set off to
hike from Lassen to Whitney carrying 72 (Kelty Super Tioga) and 54
pounds (Jansport D-5) respectively. I've kept the external frames for
the reason that Glen mentions below, as well as "sentimental" reasons.
As part of downsizing I got rid of about eight packs that chronicled my
hiking from the late 70s onward - realizing I'd never carry a load
heavier than 30 pounds again. The kind of backpacking that involves
lots of weight is just no longer appealing. I have known this for
years. Yet the sentimental/emotional part had me keep equipment I
"knew" I'd never use. My past doesn't exist in old equipment...
